CUNARD WHITE STAR [LINE]-R.M.S. "QUEEN MARY". "A noble tribute to the imagination of man." Launched September 16th 1934, by Her Majesty Queen Mary who was accompanied by His late Majesty King George V and His Majesty King Edward VIII, then Prince of Wales.
S.L.[London], Cunard White Star, 1934 Square large 4, original limp gilt wraps., lettered & coloured, with a circular illustration embossed on lower part of upper wrap., bound with a string through spine, yellow end-papers, title-p. with a small drawing at tail, [42] limp leaves in a variation of colouring (white, red, green, yellow), a description of the Queen Mary by H.M. Tomlinson on [4]pp., another article on the ship & numerous very fine coloured plates, tipped-in plates, smaller illustrations all after paintings by [ao.], Dame Laura Knight, Philip Connard, MacDonald Gill, incl. a plate depicting cartoons of various sporting heroes (boxing, Golf & Tennis: Fred Perry, Bill Tilden, "Suzanne" [Lenglen], Jean Borotra), 1 double-p. plate after a painting by C.E. Turner of R.M.S. "Q.M.", &c. depicting interiors of private diningrooms, carved doors, &c.
An interesting piece of shipping ephemera, in fairly good condition depicting fittings of R.M.S. Queen Mary: her name coincidently acquired as the Cunard White Star directors had suggested to King George V to name the ship after "Our Great Queen"(=Queen Victoria), the King however understood this as his wife's name being indicated; Queen Mary. (grease-stain in lower part of upper wrp. and in first few. pp, extremities of covers scuffed).
