Two narratives bound together of the shipwrecks of the English trigate Alceste in the Straits of Gasper) (in the course of an Expedition of 1816-1817 to deliver the Amherst Embassy to China and exploring the China Sea with extended visit to Okinawa and Loo Choo Islands), which includes a Farewell (by Mr. Gilbert, one of the officers of the Alceste) on leaving the hospitable people of Loo Choo on pp.175-178. The second division, p. 99-174, narrates the shipwreck of the Medusa, a French frigate sailing with a number of settlers (viz. table on page 100-101), that ran aground on the Arguin Bank, off the west coast of Africa; only 15 persons survived, the rest having fallen victim to the sea and cannibalism.
