The illustrations at top- and lower margins depict. the sculptures as designed by Hooyer, and executed by Louis J. The Life and times of the most famous dutch Admiral Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter (a seventeenth century military genius), born at Flushing 1607, killed in action at the sea-battle at Syracuse 1676, setting a moral example for dutch youths and adults. De Ruyter, Admiral to the dutch Fleet the greatest admiram ot the Seven United Provinces of the Netherlands-and perhaps even the World-has ever known. A man who was not only a military genius, but who possessed many other qualities: not only rebuilding the Dutch Royal Navy into a modern national fighting force that would dominate the seas for centuries to come, also known for his appraisal to the crews and re-organizing them from a bunch of lazy and drunken thieves and murderers, into an effective war-machine with self-esteem and loyalty to their commanders. A very nice copy in orig. publ. cloth. (f.e.p.'s with some minimal spotting).

Orig. cloth, richly illustrated and decorated front boards, with author's name tooled in gilt, with Royal Dutch Coat-of-Arms also tooled in gilt at head, the whole printed within a elaborately decorated gilt border, decorated spine with title in gilt. Hftitle (verso blank). (viii), 244pp. frontisp., 3 plates and many text-ills. all after drawings by A. Ronner, historical footnotes, list of contents, initial and decorative headpiece to chapter one only.
The Life and times of the famous dutch Admiral Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp (1598-1653), a dutch navy commander, especially active in the fight agains privateers from Duinkerken; his greatest achievement was the defeat of the Spanish Fleet, under the command of Admiral Antonio Oquendo, reinforced with an english squadron under the command of Sir John Pennington, and a squadron under the command of Michiel Dorne, who managed to escape the blockade of Duinkerken. After a reinforcement of the dutch Fleet, Tromp attacked on October 21, 1639. Despite the attmpts at protection by Pennington and Dorne the Spanish Fleet was defeated at the Battle of the Downs. Only the squadron commanded by Dorne managed to escape to Duinkerken. Maarten Tromp was killed during the First English War in the battle of Terheijden (near Scheveningen) on August 10, 1653 after having lost two earlier battles at sea in March and June of that same year. Written to set a moral example for dutch youths and adults. A very nice copy in orig. publ. cloth. (name in upper right corner of ti.-p.).
