Although preface to the 2nd. edn. is dated Amsterdam, 1944, title-p. bears as year of publication 1943. An excellent and still indispensable descriptive catalogue, listing tog. 453 ship's models and a great number of ship's prints and construction-drawings, at the time present in the Dutch National Maritime Museum, Amsterdam. The best edn. (first does not contain a register). Fine copy. Scarce. (ex-libris "Morpurgo", tipped-in inside upper boards).

Both abstracts from original journals have been publ. in: "Nederlandsche Zeereizen, in het laatst der zestiende, zeventiende en het begin der achttiende eeuw, naar de oorspronkelijke Journalen of gelijktijdige berigten, op nieuw uitgegeven en met eenige aanteekeningen en de noodige ophelderingen vermeerderd..., vol. IV." The first abstract deals with the voyage to Strait Maghellan by a fleet of 5 ships under command of Sebald de Weert. (See Tiele, 544. orig. edn.). The 2nd abstract deals with the first voyage of the dutch to the Indies, under command of Van Neck & Warwijck, 1598. 2 very interesting abstracts with comments. Good copy.

Houston, Official reports Battle of the Java Sea, Biography and sources), map of war theatre on endpapers, list of illustrations, table of contents.
Privately published detailed and well documented narrative report about the USS Houston, nicknamed the "Galloping Ghost of the Java Coast", was a Northampton-class heavy cruiser of the United States Navy. After the outbreak of the Pacific war 1942, Houston used ABDA command, a string force of dutch, british and U.S. navy ships, the Allied Striking Force. She took-up the Timor convoy and joined the Battle of Makassar Strait, the bettle of the Java Sea and finally the battle of Sunda Strait where she was sunk by japanese descroyers and torpedoes, after a fierce onslaught with the japanese invasion fleet on 28 February 1942. Very fine copy, NO DUSTJACKET.

On 14 November 1934 a dutch submarine H.R.Ms. "XVIII", under command of Lt.-at-Sea first class D.C.M. Hetterschij, sailed from Naval-base Den Helder for its circumnavigation of some 20.000 sea-miles, arriving at Surabaya Naval-base, colonial Indonesia, 11th July 1935. This tour-of-duty was filmed and photographed by Lt.-at-Sea 2nd. class M.S. Wytema who was engaged as cinematographer by the dutch film-factory "Polygoon", Haarlem municipality. A nice and attractive copy of this promotional brochure. Good to very good copy. (tail of spine a bit knocked).
