Attempt at a reconstruction of the original structure & function of the Kakean society of West Seram. It has been based upon earlier publications, which are critically reviewed. A survey is given of the relevant aspects of the Seramese society, such as ethnic groups, housing, genealogical & territorial organization, local government & its offices, relations between the sexes, rites of passage for boys & girls, & ethnic religion. Next, the patasiwa-patalima division is dealt with & information is given on the saniri organization & the Kakean society. Earlier theories, e.g. of Tauern on the Melanesian origin of the Kakean are criticized. On the basis of comparative material on Kei & on Melanesian secret societies he attempts to show the duality of the original structure of Seramese society, of which the Kakean is considered a ceremonial survival
