Juvenile with strong roman-catholic tendency set at East-Coast Sumatra( Deli province, Medan city), with as main character a boy, son to a freemason, his conversiton to the roman-catholic faith, and later working as a missionary on Borneo. Nice copy in orig.publ.cloth.(very light occas. soiling to outer lower boards).

The first narration by F. [H.V.A.] Ridder de Stuers, 1792-1881 is of important historic interest as it tells the story of the stranding of S.S. "Willem I" that ran on a coral reef near the Lucipara-Islands, Banda Sea (viz.::"Atlas van Tropisch Nederland", 28 D 5), with on board De Stuers and his family, travelling to the Moluccas as recently appointed Governor. Further stories:"De Indiane van Santa-Barbara [Captive amongst the Santa Barbara red Indians]; De schipbreuk van den "Duroc" op het Mellesh-rif (Lengthy narration by a Lady aboard the S.S. "Duroc", wrecked on the coast of Tierra del Fuego) and 1 other short story). A rare publication. Bieger, describes the work of 2 dutch missionaries of the "Rijnsche Missie", period 1883-1915; in this period the population of S.Nias, and especially those of the village Bawo-Lowalangi, offered much resistance to christianization; the story contains descriptions of the keeping of slaves, the Boro-Nadoe (Priest-King keeper of the local Idol), head-hunting and marriage/death rituals.
