FIRST EDITION of Author's début, the first ever indo-dutch novel strongly influenced by Emile Zola's style of literary naturalism, a realistic-pessimist artform developed in the second part of the nineteenth century. In this important novel author creates a clear window on dutch Planter's life and european society on colonial Java. Main dramatis personae in this novel is a so-called "Presentkaasje", a young man, failing his law study in Holland sent-out to a relative on Java, the Dutch East Indies, pursuing career as a Sugar planter, later as a Tobacco planter, finally went bust . Very good untrimmed copy. Very rare. (new endpapers).
