LULOFS, Madelon H., Rubber. A Romance of the Dutch East Indies. Transl. fr. the dutch by G.J. Renier & I. Clephane. 2nd. edn.
London-Toronto-Melbourne & Sydney, Cassell, 1933 Small thick 8°, original cloth, title in bold black type on spine. 314pp.
English language edition, originally publ. in dutch with as title "Rubber". Supplies good insight in daily life on a rubber-estate (Deli, East Coast Sumatra), incl. i.a. notes on coolie-life and labour. De-mythologizes the general popular opinion on life and work on large dutch and foreign estates at East Coast Sumatra in the 1930s. Athor's début, higly praised and deeply rejected by those 'insiders' taking offence to the realism in this novel, in which author paints a dark picture of dutch society living on those estates and the in-human, to say the least, treatment of [ mainly javanese] contract-coolies labouring under appalling conditions. Good copy.
