Marie Kooij (née van Zeggelen), married to Lt. KNIL Kooij or Kooy, supplies here interesting information on her life in dutch colonial Indonesia, describing her personal experiences at home with the servants and social life. The main theme is however the terrible feelings of loneliness as experiences by many [dutch/european] married women, especially at the remote postings of their husbands all over indonesia. Author lived for an extended time on a remote post in South Sulawesi. Later editions have been published under her maiden-name Van Zeggelen. A good to very good copy of the FIRST edition. Rare.

Dutch language Juvenile story, based upon historical facts and locations, set among the Buginese of S.Sulawesi, with as main characters Din, a slave-boy, to Aroe La Tanroewa (a young Buginese Prince) and their adventures, incl. i.a. notes on dutch colonial administration, the third military expedition against Bone and the final submission of Bone to the dutch. In her preface which has been suppressed in all later editions author states that this novel is based upon historical facts and that one of the villages also has been described by P. & F. Sarasin in their publication "Reisen in Celebes", 1906. Author was married to Captain H. Kooij or Kooy, the then civil authority of Soppeng. This first edition is NOT called for in any dutch public library, stated in BRINKMAN (dutch national bibliography) only. Good copy. Rare. (foxing to f.e.p.'s and prelims, some occasional marginal spotting throughout, lettering on spine faded, roman numeral V added in ink on spine, signature of previous owner in upper right corner of f.e.p.).

Juvenile with strong Roman Catholic tendency, with as main character an Indo-Javanese boy in his teens, sent-out to the Netherlands for further education. Incl. notes on discrimination, racism, descriptions of Java and the Javanese and the final call to the main character to priesthood, becoming a missionary on colonial Java. Nice copy in orig. publ. cloth. (first blanks and fore-rim with some foxing).

Tog. 3 edns. have been published, only this first edn. has an introduction by NELLIE= J.M.P. van Kol-Porrey. Spelling of author's name at end of volume has changed into Kooij- van Zeggelen. "One of the highlights of children's books on Indonesia (Daalder, Wormcruydt...). Tog. 3 edns. have been published, with a varying number of plates. Good copy. Signature on dedication-p. (G.J. & A. Dutch language Juvenile, in which a picture is painted of the Buginese noble class society after the end of the war against Bone, South Sulawesi, at the end of the 19th century, told to dutch elder children, after author's authentic experiences as the wife of a dutch Army lieutenant, which includes the story of a golder Keris Pusaka, buginese cultural heritage and customary law, the oppression of the common buginese population by the dutch. Very good copy of the second edition.

Posthumously published accont, edited from author's, a german Genral Practioner, original Ms. notes, of a sea-voyage from Rotterdam to Batavia, dutch colonial Indonesia. With detailed notes on life aboard, together with other passengers and fresh recruits of the Royal Dutch East Indian Army, arrival at Batavia which includes a description of the "new city", visit to Surabaya, a tiger-hunt in the interior of Java, a visit to an estate, &c. Text with a strong moralistic tendency. Good copy. Rare. (some light signs of splitting alongside top and tail of upper outer front joint, boards a bit dusty and faded, some minimal spotting to verso of french title).

This first edn. is completely different from the 2nd.[c.1928] and 3rd. edn.[1930]; all three edns. have different titles too. Very rare copy in orig.publ. cloth. (name-stamp in upper left corner of verso of upper boards, repeated in upper right corner of ti.-p., f.e.p. removed, ow. a very fine copy).
