Novel, partly set on Borneo and in Aceh, with as main character a Javanese convicted to hard labour, describing his adventures as a member of a chain-gang accompanying a dutch Royal constabulary patrol during their anti-guerilla actions during the Aceh-war. Very good copy, WITH dustjacket. (occasional fraying to edges of dustjacket, some minor tears restored)

(presentation inscription in Ms. in ink by previous owner in upper right corner on recte of first blank, dated 4th June 1916).

Two volume late nineteenth century dutch language novelby an "Insider", in which a picture is painted of daily life and troubles on a remote coffee-estate in a mountainous area of Java. The complexity of a small closed multi-recial society is described in rather detail, e.g.: wuropean management and employees tue utter lineliness and feelings of insecurity of europeans in a hot and mysterious tropical country with its overwheling vegetation, contacts with indonesian-dutch office staff, estate-coolies and chinese mandoors, etc. Rare. (copy in modern private cloth, library ticket at top of first page, volume I, library number in bold blue pencil on ti.-p. of volume II, Margins waterstained almost throughout, paper b rowning, NO signs of brittleness however).
