Daum (1850-1898) was not only one of the best vovelists in colonial Indonesia, but also the most important journalist of his time. As Chief-editor of "De Locomotief", "Het Indisch Vaderland" (both appearing in Semarang) and "Het Bataviaasch Nieuwsblad", he produced a great number of articles, the best ever writtin in Indonesia.
