Dutch language romantic story told to dutch youths, set in and around Batavia, approx. 1832, describing adventures of main character a black African corporal of the Dutch East Indian Army. Recruitment of black Africans from Ghana on behalf of the Dutch East Indies Army started in 1830 under the administration of Governor-General Johannes van den Bosch and ended in 1848 under british diplomatic pressure. Literature on the so-called "Hitam Belanda" or "black dutchmen" despised by the javanese population is scarcely present. Very fine copy in orig. publ. cloth.

Novel translated for the first time in dutch, set in the former dutch Territory of Borneo, or Kalimantan, with strong dramatic tendency, an interacial love-affair doomed to end in disaster. Very good untrimmed copy, WITH DUSTJACKED, Published under german nazi oppression during the second worldwar. (some minimal pin-prick foxing to lower outer dustjacket). Joseph Conrad, from polish ancestry and naturalized british subject, can be considered as one of the foremost novelists at his time. A master prose stylist who brought a distinctly non-English sensibility into English literature.
