With 4 chromolithographed plates finished by hand ("Planches Gommées) drawn by E. Harduoin and lithographed by Lemercier, Paris. Illustrating various types from nineteenth century Dutch East Indies: a Njai or concubine (housekeeper), an Arab on Java, a Bride from Batavia in traditional bridal dress and a Javanese Chief in traditional hunting dress, commentary to these plates by W.L. Ritter. 16 captioned monochrome lithographs, also with literary commentary, table of contents. NOT called-for in Royal Dutch Library KB.
Dutch language compilation of literary essays and poetry accompanied by artistic monochrome lithographs. The four chromolithographs illustrate indigenous individuals and are VERY SUITABLE FOR FRAMING. Good to very good copy in attractive orig. publ. cloth. (all plates with a small waterstain in lower right corner, NOT touching illustrated area, some occasional and light offsetting, small black stain on front cover).

Illustrations with captions and occasionally with more extensive text, featuring the following stories: an AB-book with single-line sayings; plaatjes bij de kleide gedichtjes voor kinderen van Mr. Hieronymus van Alphen (poems by Hieronymus van Alpen for small children); De Rarekiek van Korporaal Smit, I and II (popular street puppet theatre from Corporal Smit, I and II); allerlei (a mixed lot); Lotgevallen van Robinson Crusoë (the story of Robinson Crusoë by Daniel Defoe with illustrations after Grandville (pseud. of Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard, 1803-1847); Afbeeldingen uit het dierenrijk (illustrations from the Kingdom of Animals, both domestic as well as exotic); Fabelen (Fables); Karikaturen (caricatures).
