Life and [literary] work of Willem (1710-, suicide 1768), and Onno (1711-1779) Zwier Van Haren, brothers, members of old frisian Gentry; both elder and younger brother were poets of some importance, both followed academic instruction, both were friends to Prince William IV of the Netherlands, and both held important public offices in Friesland Province. Willem became one of the foremost dutch 18th century poets: his didactic poem "Gevallen van Friso" (1741) was stronly influenced by Voltaire, his next poem "Leonidas" (1742) sold a 100 000! copies. He committed suicide in 1768. His younger brother, Onno, a lawyer was forced to drop all his public offices in 1760, being accused of incest. A nice copy in orig. green publ. cloth. (fr. inner-joint splitting but skilfully refixed, corners somewh. bumped).

Gysbrecht van Aemstel, a seventeenth century (1637) tragedy by Joost van den Vondel, a great dutch author and poet, in which the (down) fall and vanity of earthly power versus Eternal values is sketched, author probably influenced by his earlier translation of Virgilius' Ćneis. The Play appeared to be a tremendous success and was frequently (annualy) performed up till 1969 on New Years' Day, performed in Amsterdam Municipal Theatre. Alphons (Alphonsus Johanna Maria Diepenbrock, 1863-1921, Dutch composer, essayist and classicist, composed music and chorus. An extraordinary copy in full vellum bound by Elias P. van Bommel. Publication can be considered as an absolute highlight in dutch Art Nouveau book design. Rare. (few pp. with some wear to edges, first ppl with some mrginal foxing, ow. very clean contents, modest previous owners' signature with date 3 Nov. 1911, some skilful minor restaurations to spine).
