The first section by Stellingwerff is an excellent and well-documented historical survey of dutch-japanese relations through the ages, after the establishment of a Dutch East India company trading settlement at Deshima; The exhibition-catalogue, simultaneously held lists and describes tog. 74 antique (18th-19th century). japanese woodblock prints and paintings, depict. the 'red-haired' devils at Deshima, including their ships, maps, animals and documents. MINT copy. Difficult to find.

Although this reprint is an abridged edition after the original memorandum it still contains the most essential points of interest, e.g. Japan's preparation for colonial expansion in the Far East (China) and Southeast Asia, incl. mainland Southeast Asia. The political-military concept of a "Greater Asia" under japanese administration was already regocnized in the memorandum, which also can be considered as a prelude to the Pacific war 1942-1945.. Very good copy. (unobtrusive ex-library accession stamp at upper right corner of front cover).

Detaile french language scholarly report by a swedish botanist about his voyage via the Cape of Good Hope to the Dutch East Indies and Japan. Still a fundamental source about the flora of Japan, which includes however observations about animals including japanese shell fish and i.a. notes about the dutch settlement Deshima, Nagasaki. Thunberg was a Swedish botanist, explorer and one of the great and most wellknown students of Linnaeus. His work has been translated, annotated and expanded by two important french Scientists: L. Langles (who revised the general part; J.H. Lamarck(a diciple to Linnaeus) annotated the part on the Natural History of colonial Indonesia and Japan. This work is the result of author's 15 month's sojourn and observation while in Japan, employed as a V.O.C. surgeon stationed at the dutch Tradingpost Deshima, Nagasaki harbour. Text includes a report about the voyage itself, arrival in Japan, kbotanical research, trade between China and Japan, his participation with the 1776 dutch annual tour of Tribute to the Shogun Court, Yedo, also known as Edo, later Tokyo, in dutch "Hofreis". Suring this slow travel Thunberg was able to collect many Japanese plants. His scientific activities resulted in the first detailed description of the flora and fauna of Japan, "Flora Japonica". Aso incluses information about the Japanese population, characteristics, names, traditional clothing, administration, religion, incl. i.a. notes about japanese christians, language, law and order, customs & courtisans, zoological and mineral observations, &c...Plates featuring Javanese weapons (Keris), Japanese weapons & Armour, seals, callisgraphy (6 plates), the 6 folding plates depict. flora of Japan. A very fine set, contents crisp and clean. Rare. (marginal browning to hftitles of vols. 1,3 and 4 only, contents crisp and clean).
