Jan van Riebeeck, 1617-1677, dutch surgeon and merchant, servant of the Dutch East India Company. By command of his V.O.C. masters yhe became the first european to establish a trading posts by the name "De Goede Hoop" (The Good Hope), in hitherto unknown and unexplored South Africa at the Cape of Good Hope. This fortress and trading post grew-out to the Cape Colony and finally to the Republic of South Africa. Together 141 former P.O.W. and Internees have been interviewed by author about life and exploits before, during the japanese oppression and after the return home. It also includes an introduction about pre-war colonial Indonesia. A true goldmine of data and of human interest so many years after the War's end. Good to very good copy. (copy a little bit dull).
