Dutch language biography about life, times and missionary achievements of father Petrus Vertenten, M.S.C., pioneer missionary amongst the Kaja-Kaja tribe, former territory of dutch New Guinea, now Irian Jaya. Good copy. Z(a number of library stamps on french title and ti.-p.). Kaja-Kaja is an old fashioned name for Marind-anim tribe, Merauke district. Father Vertenten worked from 1910-1925 amongs the Marind-anim, a tribe known for her head hunting practices and a bizarre for of sexual fertility ritual. Father Vertenten was confronted by an imported mortal veneral disease amongst the Marind-anim, threatening extinction for the whole population. It took Vertenten a long and harsh political struggle persuading dutch colonial administration, and finally dutch public administration to allow large scale medical treatment and assistance that saved the tribe.
