Although title suggests that main character is a girl ("Snoes"), it is in fact a boy. Juvenile with strong roman-catholic tendency set at East-Coast Sumatra( Deli province, Medan city), with as main character a boy, son to a freemason, his conversiton to the roman-catholic faith, and later working as a missionary on Borneo. Nice copy in orig.publ.cloth.(very light occas. soiling to outer lower boards).

This New Testament, in dutch, published by command of the Nederlandsche Bijbelgenootschap, NBG, dutch colonial ("Indische") version, has been produced in the War-year 1940 for the Indonesian Protestant Church, and has been presented to Teunis Cornelis Proper (born 's-Gravenhage, 2/2/[18]93, upon his avowal to the church (pending membership) on 23 January 1944, during a public ceremony as held in the Navy P.O.W. Camp Macassar (Sulawesi); provenance: a 9-line message in Ms. in ink, signed by the acting Protestan Minister, by command of the Malang(Java) Church-council, with his, unidentified, signature, on a tipped-in leave on verso of first blank. With another 6-line Ms. dedication on recte of first blank, signed and dated Malang, 23/1'44. With some Japanese characters stamped in margin of Hftitle and a red japanese "tjap". Curious & rare.

This juvenile story edited by J.N. Bieger, describes the work of 2 dutch missionaries of the "Rijnsche Missie", period 1883-1915; in this period the population of S.Nias, and especially those of the village Bawo-Lowalangi, offered much resistance to christianization; the story contains descriptions of the keeping of slaves, the Boro-Nadoe (Priest-King keeper of the local Idol), head-hunting and marriage/death rituals.
