Protective monochrome dustjacket. 36pp. 2 captioned monochrome plates after photographs of which one featuring a Ceram Sacred House, detailed explanations of terms and expressions used in text printed at tail-margins, first chapter with a decorative head-pieces in Alfurese traditional art-style.
Stories by an assistant-minister, about the christianization of the population of North-west Seram or, Ceram (Moluccan Island group), e.g.: A tale on the origin of Seram from the sun and the moon has been included; also with i.a. notes on the pressure on the Alfurese population by the socio-political Association "Kakehan"and by muslim-teachers. Detailed dutch language history of the "NZG" ("Nederlandsch Zendeling Genootschap/Dutch [protestant] Missionary Association)and her missionary posts in the Dutch East Indies, based upon NZG archivalia and printed sources. Pp.102-173 deal with the Moluccas (:1814-1842; 1854-1864). The history of each missionary station is dealt with Ambon, Kaibobo & Elaputih (Seram), Kayeli (Buru), Saparua, Haruku, further information on Timor (Kupang), Babar Islands, Roti, Savu, Kisar, Leti; the Rhiouw-Archipelago; Java, Sulawesi and Sumatra. Also including a section in which training of missionaries, sons to missionaries is described in great detail, further wity information on so-called "fatal year" in which a theological schism is described, affecting association's unity, which became effective in 1864 in the establishment of other missionary associations as UZV ("Utrechtsche Zendings Vereeniging"). Still an important survey of dutch protestant colonial indonesian mission. Fine untrimmed copy.

An important source for this work has been an unpubl. art. on Mentawei culture, written in Malay, that Kruyt located on Pagai. The following topics are covered: bibliography, family relation ships (kinship terms, marriage rules), rules of inheritance, name giving ceremonies, body mutilation (filing of teeth), house construction, types of animals found and used here, incl. myths related to animals, headhunting, agriculture. Dutch language missionary historic story in which Kruyt, a dutch reformed protestan missionary who worked for a considerable time amongst the Toraja at Posso (Central Sulawesi), describes the controversy between two Posso Headmen Ta Lasa (Landscape Lage) and Papa I Woente, another important Headman. The latter supported Kruyt in his efforts to christianize the Toraja of Posso, although he, Papa I Woente, was never conversed to the christian belief. (french title foxed, front edge of bookblock foxed, contents good).
